Frontlash (Schweden)
Erzähl uns bitte etwas zu Frontlash und deren Mitglieder. Frontlash ist eine der ältesten und am längsten bestehenden Hardcorebands in Stockholm und Schweden. Wir stehen für wahre Hardcoremusik. Die Band besteht aus Matte am Gesang (außerdem bin ich Drummer in einer Black Metal Band namens AIFUR) Erik spielt die Gitarre Fille am Baß Totte am Schlagzeug (zusätzlich spielt er noch Schlagzeug in der Punkband TWOPOINTEIGHT) www.myspace.com/tpetwopointeight
Wie lange gibt es Frontlash bereits und wie viel Material habt Ihr bisher veröffentlicht? Die Vorgeschichte begann 1994, zu dieser Zeit waren Erik und ich unter dem Namen Last Warning unterwegs. Ich war dort am Schlagzeug. 1996 änderten wir unseren Namen in Frontlash, '97 kam Totte an die Drums und ich versuchte mich am Gesang und 1998 stieß Fille zu uns. Im September '99 kam unsere erste EP “STHLM HC” raus. In den vergangenen Jahren haben wir eine Menge an Vinyl-EPs raus gebracht und waren auch auf diversen Compilations vertreten. Letztendlich erschien dann im März 08 unser erstes Vollalbum “Fall back to zero” auf CD.
Viele Leute kennen den amerikanischen Hardcore und wissen viel darüber, allerdings ist das Wissen über die europäische Hardcoreszene nicht so ausgeprägt. Erzählt darum doch mal etwas über die schwedische Hardcoreszene. Über die HC-Szene in Schweden oder Stockholm gibt es nicht so viel zu erzählen. Es gibt nicht so viele Hardcorebands, meist sind es Punkbands.
Ist es einfach, Orte für Hardcoreveranstaltungen zu finden und woraus setzt sich das Publikum bei diesen Shows zusammen (Punx, Skinheads, Hardcoreleute)? Es ist nicht so einfach, geeignete Plätze für solche Konzerte in Stockholm zu finden.Aber einmal im Jahr können wirhier schon spielen. In der Hauptsache besuchen unsere Konzerte Hardcoreleute, Metalheads und einige Punx und Skins.
Von der Entstehung bis heute entwickelte sich Hardcore immer mehr zu einer eigenen Szene. Seht Ihr das als eine positive Entwicklung? Wenn ich die Hardcorebewegung in der Entwicklung seit den frühen '80ern sehe mit Bands wie Cro Mags & Agnostic Front, so muß ich das als positive Entwicklung sehen. Es war gut, sich eine eigene Szene jenseits des Punks zu schaffen.
Eure Veröffentlichung “Fall back to zero” ist eine tolle und kraftvolle CD. Erzählt maletwas über die CD, die Lieder und Texte. Es ist eine sehr harte Scheibe mit 10 Songs und einer Spielzeit von lediglich 26 Minuten. Die ganze Band arbeitete hart daran im Studio. Wir sind sehr zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis. Es ist moderner Sound mit Oldschool-Feeling. Einige der Lieder sind schon einige Jahre alt, andere wurden erst kurz vor der Aufnahme fertig. Auch kam das Lied “South side” mit auf's Album, ein Lied welches Erik und ich noch zu Zeiten von Last Warning schrieben. Sehr stolz sind wir darauf, daß der legendäre Leeway Sänger Eddie Sutton als Gastsänger bei “Around the world” mitwirkt. Alle Texte stammen von mir und basieren auf reelle Geschichten und Erlebnisse, die ich für so wichtig hielt, sie in Liedern festzuhalten.
Habt Ihr irgendwelche Einflüsse in Eurer Musik verarbeitet, oder spielt Ihr doch eher einen eigenen Stil? Ich denke, daß wir einen eigenen Stil haben, ich könnte jetzt keine Band nennen, die ähnlich wie wir klingen. Allerdings übte der NYHC einen großen Einfluß auf uns aus. Bands wie Cro-Mags, Agnostic Front, Madball, warzone und Sick of it all beeinflußten uns schon irgendwie. Das alles brachten wir im Einklang mit einer härteren Kante speziell im Gesang.
Was beeinflußt Euer Songwriting und wer ist für die Lieder verantwortlich? Mehr oder minder alle in der Band. Wir bevorzugen es, einfach so zu jammen und um dann die besten Parts mit einzubauen. Wir arbeiten hart daran, verschiedene Tempis und Beats in die einzelnen Songs einfließen zu lassen. Der Einfluß kommt durch jede Art härterer Musik. Als Beispiel nenne ich hier mal, daß wir uns bei unsere neuen Stücken sehr von Cold As Life aus Detroit inspirieren ließen.
Das Lied “Over the edge” ist von Agnostic Front. Was bedeutet Agnostic Front für Euch? Agnostic front ist eine der bedeutendsten Hardcorebands, besonders jetzt wo sie sich mit großartigem Metalsound zurück melden. Zu früheren Zeiten hatten wir immer einige AF-Cover in unserer Setlist.
Neben dem “South side Records”-Label zeichnet sich auch das “Sliptrick Records”-Label für Euer Album verantwortlich. Wie kam die Zusammenarbeit zustande? Unsere CD war zuerst auf “Countdown Records” aus Italien geplant. Allerdings haben sie derzeit viel zu tun mit anderen Veröffentlichungen und so klappte das nicht. So half uns ein Freund von mir, Carlo, der für “Countdown” arbeitet, den Deal mit “Sliptrick” auszuhandeln.
Bekamt Ihr viele Reaktionen aus Amerika, was Eure CD betrifft und welcher Art sind/waren diese? Wir vertreiben unsere CD dort nicht selbst, daß ist die Arbeit unseres Labels. Jay, welcher der Boß von “Sliptrick” ist, teilte mir mit, daß sich unsere CD dort gut verkauft. Auch kamen positive Reaktioen von Mike von den Hoods.
Was für Pläne habt Ihr in der näheren Zukunft? Wir haben einige neue T-Shirts zum Verkauf auf unserer myspace-Seite, schaut einfach mal nach! Der nächste Schritt wird dann ein neuer Song, der auf einen Sampler soll, dieser heißt “Down for the core part 10”. Erscheinen wird dieser auf “Back ta basic”, das ist das Label von Rick (25 Ta Life) und das soll zu Beginn 2009 passieren. Andere Bands darauf sind 25 Ta Life, Cold Side, Coming Correct und North Side Kings. Darüber hinaus wird es etliche neue Songs geben, die auf's neue Album sollen, welches hoffentlich auch 2009 erscheint. Am 2. April spielen wir zusammen mit 25 Ta Life hier in Stockholm.
Wie wichtig ist das Internet für Untergrundbands? Für Bands ohne Vertrag ist es eine sehr wichtige Plattform. Sie können sich auf myspace präsentieren und dort ihre Songs vorstellen. Das ist unsere Form der Demotapes in heutiger Zeit.

Please tell us a bit about Frontlash and the members. Frontlash is one of Stockholm & Sweden’s oldest and longest standing HC ever. We represent the real hardcore music. The band is Matte vocals (I also the drummer of the black metal band called AIFUR) Erik guitar Fille bass Totte drums (he also plays drums in the punk band TWOPOINTEIGHT www.myspace.com/tpetwopointeight
How long exist Frontlash and how much outputs you have? The pre-history started back in 94 at that time Erik & I travel under the name “Last Warning” with me on drums. In 96 did we take the name Frontlash, in 97 did Totte join the band on drums and I became the bands vocalist, and in 98 Fille join us. In September 99 was our first EP “STHLM HC” released. Under the past years we have released a bunch of vinyl EP´s and we have also appeared on some compilation. Finally in March 08 we release our first CD”Fall back to zero”
Most people know much about Hardcore from the USA but only a bit till nothing about the scene in Europe. Tell us a bit about the Swedish Hardcore scene. Is not so much to say about the HC scene in Stockholm and the rest of Sweden, unfortunately there are not so many HC bands out there, is mostly punk bands.
Is it easy to find places for Hardcoreshows in Sweden and what kind of visitors come to the gigs (Punx, Skinheads, Hardcorepeople)? Is not easy to find a place to gig at here in Stockholm but we usually play here once a year. Our supporters are mainly HC people, metal heads and some skins & punks.
From the beginning till yet Hardcore formed more and more to an own scene. Is it a good evolution? As I see it have the hardcore movement been a own scene seen the early 80es with bands like Cro-Mags & Agnostic Front, it was defiantly a good evolution for the early HC to build their own scene away from the punk scene.
Your release “Fall back to zero” is an great powerful and aggressive output. Tell us a bit over the CD and the songs and lyrics. It is a really strong effort with 10 songs under 26 minutes, the whole band worked really hard in the studio. We felt very please with the production of the album a modern sound with an old school felling. Some of the songs was a few years old some other did we finish just before the recording session; we did also record “South Side” who was the first song Erik & I written back in 94 when we travel under the name “Last Warning”. We are very proud to have the legendary LEEWAY singer Eddie Sutton as a guest vocalist on the song “around the world” on the album. I written all lyrics, they are based on real stories and things that I found necessary to sing about.
Are you put influences in your music or plays you an own style? I think we have find an own style I don’t know any other band that sounds like us. We got a great influence from the NYHC scene with bands like Cro-Mags, Agnostic Front, Madball, Warzone & Sick Of It All mixed with a harder edge especially on the vocals.
What influence the songwriting, who wrote the songs? The whole band is more or less invalid in all songs we made; we prefer to jam until we got some cool ideal that we turn into a whole song. We work hard to try different tempos and beats to every song. The influence can be all types of hard music, as an example one of the new songs we work on is very inspired of Cold As Life from Detroit.
The song “Over the edge” are from Agnostic Front. What was Agnostic Front for you? Agnostic Front is one of the greatest hardcore bands, especially now when they are back with their metal sound. Back in old days did we always include a few AF covers in our set list.
Beside the “South side records” label stand the “Sliptrick records” label on the CD. How came it to the contract with the American label? Our CD was at the first place planned to be out on “Countdown Records” in Italy unfortunately they where to busy with many other release at that time So a friend of mine named Carlo that works for “Countdown Records” helped us with the “Sliptrick Records” deal.
Give it many reaction from the USA about your release and what kind of reaction was it? We does not handle CD in the USA is our labels work, Jay who are the label boss of “Sliptrick Records” told me that our CD sells quit good in the USA. We have also heard good reaction from people like Mike from HOODS.
What plans you have for the nearest future? Right now we got new t-shirt designs up on our myspace for sale, check it out! And our next step will be to have a song on the upcoming comp CD “Down For the Core part 10”, out on Rick of 25 Ta Life own label “Back Ta Basic” in early 2009. Some other bands on that comp will be 25 ta life, Cold side, Coming Correct, North side kings. We also got a bunch of new song that we will work on for the next CD, that I hope we will record somewhere in 2009. We got an upcoming gig here in Stockholm at the 2nd of April 2009 with 25 Ta Life.
How important was the internet for bands from the underground? Is really important for unsigned bands, they can have their own myspace site and put out some songs. Is our times demo tape trading.
